In the beginning

Gateway Outdoors started trading in summer 2005, with the aim of providing a mobile provision for outdoor solutions for anyone who wanted to experience the outdoor environment. Gateway is run by Matt Craig, who has been operating as an outdoor instructor in multiple disciplines since 1999, and very much maintains the company ethos that everyone must have the opportunity to get out and try something new.

Gateway outdoors is a multi-discipline provider and, as you can see on the activities page, we offer many different activities. As such we are equally at home going on extended canoe or mountain expeditions to technical coaching on mountain bikes and rock climbing. This variety keeps us motivated and enthused in all the various projects we have been involved with.

The idea of a mobile outdoor providers business is that if you have an idea or aspiration, then we can help you achieve your goals and/ or provide the most suitable solution for your ideas. We discuss your needs, organise the activity, meet you on location and get stuck in. It’s that easy!

Duke of Edinburgh : Gold Award

For us this is where expeditions really become part of a group’s aspirations. It demonstrates the ability to think about and plan and incorporate the “AIM” or purpose of the expedition. We have developed a training plan incorporating practise expedition, which is designed to enable groups to take these expedition skills anywhere in the country to journey and complete with ease. We believe that this should be an expedition without barriers or limitations, so we have put a fixed price on expeditions at this level, to encourage participants to stretch their horizons and travel throughout the country.

The below itinerary is a fixed price for expeditions on canoe or bike that you will find on the expeditions page of the website, for those with a previous D of E award. There may be an extra cost for expeditions that will require more planning time and even advance trips to check out the area!

An all-inclusive itinerary of:

  • 2 training days (direct entrants will require extra training)
  • 4 days practise expedition
  • 5 day qualifying expedition (extra day to include preparation and shake down session!)

Gateway Outdoors will provide all group equipment and paperwork processing.

The average cost of this package is £500 per candidate for canoe / bike expeditions.
(Price is not dependent on the location of the expedition!)
